SUMMARY:Opening Panel Discussion: Ecumenical Period of Reflection on Disability and the Bible
DESCRIPTION:As we mark the first anniversary of the release of the final report of the Disability Royal Commission\, a group of ecumenical leaders invite you to a period of reflection on disability and the bible. \nThis opening panel discussion brings together biblical scholars and disability theologians to reflect together on the bible’s diverse portraits of disability and impairment\, and on the contexts in which these texts were written and those in which they continue to be interpreted. \nThis is a discussion that might shape our practice of reading and ministry together\, drawing on the latest research and theological reflection on diverse lived experience. And it will open a discussion for which Inside Others will provide further resources over the weeks that follow\, for those who would like to take this reflection further. \nThese are crucial questions for everyone who draws on the bible in ministry settings and you are warmly invited to join us for it. \nThere will be opportunity to join a collegial group (sometimes called a Peer Learning Group) to deepen learning\, and for ongoing reflection on practice in your context. There will be three gatherings fortnightly. More information on October 8. \nPanellists: \n \nMEREDITH ALLAN \nMeredith Allan is National Treasurer of ISAAC-Australia and was world President of ISAAC 2018-2020. ISAAC is the International Society for Augmented and Alternative Communication.  Meredith worked for the Australian Public Service for almost 30 years and now has blissfully retired from the full time workforce.  Meredith works on a casual basis as a Communication Assessor and Disability Educator with Scope in Victoria\, which is part of the process to be awarded the Communication Access symbol. Meredith also is on the Board of the NDIA. \nMeredith is a person who uses Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to communicate and takes great joy in watching other people who use AAC become more confident and take leadership roles. \n  \n \nLOUISE GOSBELL \nLouise is an researcher and writer in disability\, with a focus on disability in the Bible as well as in church practice. In 2021\, Louise worked with the Social Issues Committee of the Sydney Anglican Diocese to release a set of accessibility guidelines for churches on disability inclusion called “Everyone Welcome: Accessible church for all.” Louise lives with a neurological disability and a number of chronic health conditions & is also the parent to a child with disability. \n  \n \nJUSTIN GLYN SJ \nJustin Glyn SJ is a Catholic priest\, Jesuit. academic in the area of law and theology and a civil and canon lawyer. SUMMARY:Thinking Theologically About...
DESCRIPTION:Rev Dr Kylie Crabbe is our guest for Thinking Theologically About… on February 29th. Kylie is a UCA minister and Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Catholic University. Her area of speciality is biblical studies\, and area of interest and current research is the way we understand disability in the scriptures. Accordingly\, Kylie’s topic with us will be:  ‘Biblical Disability and Its Discontents: Exploring Faithful Readings for the Whole People of God. \nKylie’s sessions will give the opportunity to Think Theologically about biblical texts that explicitly relate to disability\, with some resources also from disability theology and other recent work from the disability sector. These questions take us beyond what it means to be an “inclusive” church\, to what we imagine the church itself even is and our shared experiences of human limitation. There’ll also be the chance to share some handy resources in development for those who use the bible in worship and pastoral care\, including on the history of interpretation (in art\, music\, literature\, early Church sermons\, etc) of biblical passages about disability. This “biblical reception” is another way of illuminating aspects of our own readings and assumptions. \n  \nCome along to the Centre for Theology and Ministry at 10.30 am. The session concludes at 12.30 when those who wish gather at Sage and Grace café for lunch. \nYou are welcome to attend remotely. You’ll receive a zoom link the night before the event. \nSee you there! \n  \nTo register\, click here

SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Transitional Ministry\, part 2: The Work of the Congregation
DESCRIPTION:This year FTM C is being delivered in a combination of online and in person formats. You must participate in all 4 days to record satisfactory attendance: \n  \n\nAugust 9th – 9.30-4.30pm – online\nAugust 16th – 9.30-4.30pm – online\nAugust 23rd – 9.30-5pm; 6.30-8.30pm\, August 24th – 9.30-4.30pm – in person at the Centre for Theology and Ministry.\n\n  \nFundamentals of Transitional Ministry: The Work of the Congregation (FTM-C) is the second part of FTM training; it builds upon the work begun in Fundamentals of Transitional Ministry: The Work of the Leader (FTM-L). You need to have completed FTM –L in order to enrol in FTM-C. Satisfactory completion of FTM – C qualifies the participant as an Intentional Interim Minister. Because the role of IIM is extremely demanding\, you will need a formal recommendation from your presbytery\, or appropriate synod staff or committee chairperson to enrol (Referee Form can be found below with the Application Form). \n  \nFTM – C is a four day program designed to provide information and experiences that will be helpful to people who plan to function in a congregational leadership role especially during a time of clerical transition or other major period of upheaval- like a global pandemic\, or a radically new mission opportunity. In FTM C you will identify tools for use in congregations that will empower them to negotiate transition times with greater patience\, wisdom and hope. \n  \nSatisfactory completion of FTM-C involves a supervised project. Given that the course content is useful for anyone in ministry\, you may enrol and not participate in the assessment/fieldwork component. However\, to be an accredited Intentional Interim Minister you need to complete the more formal application process\, assessment and fieldwork. \n  \nLink to course application form: \nhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1fjsf3AMEpt_8vta0VntdNnOc1ttzZcDprujDfjpN79o/edit# \nCost: \n$220 – Early bird (available until July 9th) \n$250 – General (after July 9th) \n  \nRegistrations close on July 27\, 2022 \n  \nLimited accommodation is available onsite at Maclean House. To book or for further information regarding accommodation please contact the Centre for Theology and Ministry on 03 9340 8800 or email macleanhouse.ctm.uca.edu.au \n  \nTo register\, click here

SUMMARY:Preachfest!
DESCRIPTION:Through the lens of COVID\, political changes\, environmental concerns\, culture changes\, local needs and the many other contextual realities of our time and place\, we are going to explore some important questions: \n\nWhat is the point of preaching?\nIs the art of preaching dead?\nCan preaching change anything?\n\nPreachfest! Australia is an inaugural event that has taken its cues from The Festival of Homiletics in the US and the Preaching Festival in the UK\, which are week-long conference designed to inspire discourse about preaching\, worship\, and society. \nPreachfest! will give you the opportunity to hear other gifted preachers and teachers\, to network and share resources. For preachers\, the opportunity to be encouraged and inspired is invaluable. This event will provide a great opportunity for you to refine your art of preaching\, fine-tune your ability to proclaim God’s Good News in your context\, and\, be inspired and challenged by the array of teachers\, leaders\, and preachers\, in person (Sydney and Canberra) and online and other interactive portals. \nThere will be a hub hosted by Fran Barber at the Centre for Theology and Ministry (Melbourne\, VIC). Please email fran.barber@victas.uca.org.au if you wish to attend. \n  \nFor further information\, please visit Preachfest! \n  \n \n  \nTo download the flyer please click here \n

SUMMARY:Liturgy Lab with Stephen Burns
DESCRIPTION:SEMESTER 2 INTENSIVE: JULY 19\, 20\, 21 & 22.\nA wonderful Continuing Education opportunity from PILGRIM THEOLOGICAL COLLEGE\nCourse code: DL2400P-DL9400P \nHave you spent time recently reflecting theologically on your community’s liturgical life? Would you like outside input to deepen your approach to liturgy in the 2st Century church? In this unit you will explore kinaesthetic and other arts used in worship\, and reflect on the pastoral\, public and representative vocation of the one who presides. \nThis unit will expose you to insights from ecumenical liturgical renewal and liturgical theology as these relate to the missional vocation of the church. Special attention is given to Anglican and Uniting contexts of worship\, and a significant portion of the unit will be given to embodied and enacted liturgical practice. \nConsider enrolling (as a full credit or audit student) with a few colleagues\, then forming a Peer Learning Group afterwards focussing on exploring\, in an ongoing way\, your liturgical practice in the light of the insights from the unit. There are Continuing Education grants to assist with both auditing costs\, and to support a Peer Learning Group. https://ctm.uca.edu.au/resources/funding-scholarships/ \nFor further information\, contact Rev Fran Barber\, Continuing education Coordinator\, fran.barber@victas.uca.org.au. \nTo enrol in this unit\, please contact the Registrar of Pilgrim Theological College\, Erlinda Loverseed: Erlinda.loverseed@pilgrim.edu.au \nDownload the event flyer \n  \nImage: www.JohnAugustSwanson.com – copyright 1997 by John August Swanson

SUMMARY:Art of Belief
DESCRIPTION:A unique Continuing Education opportunity from Pilgrim Theological College at the NGV: \nArt of Belief \nAR/CH 211oP-31\, 10P-9110P \nKatherine Massam and Howard Wallace \n(Classes Thursdays 1- 5pm on May 2\, 9\, 16\, 23\, Sept 5\, 12 & Oct 17) \nDo you use art as a way of engaging your community/congregation in liturgy or preaching and teaching? Or would you like to use art more readily to enhance your church’s life and witness\, but are not confident in how to do this?  Art is a powerful medium through which to understand both our surrounding culture and the faith of the church\, and how those aspects relate to each other.  In this unit you will gain greater understanding of the impact European and Aboriginal traditions of art have had on Australian Christianity.  You will develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of the representation of selected key aspects of Christian belief\, by drawing specifically on the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria – in dialogue with other images.   The majority of class time will be at the Gallery itself. \nConsider enrolling (as full credit or audit) with a few colleagues\, and then forming a Peer Learning Group afterwards focussing on developing your use of art in ministering with your congregation/community.  There are Continuing Education grants to assist with both auditing costs\, and to support a Peer Learning Group. \nFor further information\, contact Rev Fran Barber\, Continuing Education Coordinator\, fran.barber@victas.uca.org.au
